Organic Cotton in danger

Bamboolik - Organic Cotton in danger - Czech Cloth Diapers, Zero Waste, Eco-Friendly Home    How closing down of one factory made us face an ethical dilemma.

In April this year, we have pompously introduced our new Organic Cotton Absorbing Inserts. These diaper inserts have several benefits (compared to their AI2 DUO counterparts):

  • They’re made of 100% organic cotton (GOTS certified).

  • They’re more absorbing than our DUO inserts.

  • They provide more „grip“ for a Snappi fastener (for the „newborn“ fold of our Shaped Insert).

We were so proud of our new line! We have invested a lot of money and time to introduce a high-quality product from 100% natural material (there are no added artificial fibres in our organic cotton). Our organic cotton is of European origin. Or was. Grown and manufactured in Turkey.  European origin matters to us a great deal as we’ve always strived to be as local as possible, since the very beginning of Bamboolik.

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 crisis affected many of us and as a result, „our“ factory in Turkey closed down. That means we lost a key supplier, for good. And to make matters even worse, we found out about it when it had been already too late – in the moment when we tried to place a new order. (And yes, we also think it’s very likely that the coronavirus could not have been the only reason for bankruptcy but we can only speculate about that as we lack a full insight in the situation.)

And what do we do now? Basically, we have three options.

1) The easy way out would be to buy organic cotton terry in China (or somewhere in Asia) as there is a variety of suppliers and the market is very fast there. Then, we quickly cut and sew the fabric and make our Organic Cotton Absorbing Inserts out of it. Thus preventing the inserts from going out of stock. Pros of this option? It’s a quick fix. Cons? European origin will become a history. Moreover, we won’t have time to thoroughly test the fabric (more on that later).

2) We do have some organic cotton terry on stock, it’s the one we use for our Organic Cotton Menstrual Pads. So we considered using that. Pros of this option? It’s available right here, right now. Cons? We have tested this terry for our Absorbing Inserts before and were not 100% happy with the results.

3) We start searching for a new supplier right away and we’ll go through the process as always – samples of fabric, diaper samples, testing samples in action, washing samples repeatedly (we always wash our samples for weeks so that we can guarantee our diapers can withstand frequent washing). Pros of this option? It’s within our values and principles. Cons? This will take months! And that means our new organic cotton won’t be available for a long time. Which is even sadder as it’s a brand new line!

What would you advise poor Bamboolik now? Option 1, 2 or 3? Hands on your buttons…..

Well. In case you’ve known us for a while, you know we have to choose option 3. Even if we’re mad about it. We believe in karma and betraying our principles (or selling a product that is not in top notch quality for us) won’t do us any good in the long run.

So, we’re so sorry to write this, but our Organic Cotton Absorbing Inserts have been taken down from our online store. We’ll let you know when they’re back in stock! We sincerely hope that we’ll be able to sort this our shortly and that we’ll be able to maintain our principles as well as quality.

See you later, organic cotton.

By the way, Organic Cotton Muslin Squares are still in stock! They’re made of a different fabric from a different factory. Luckily :)
