Shelf-life of PUL

While diaper inserts made of bamboo viscose or organic cotton, handled in line with our maintenance instructions, can last for the entire diapering period, usually even for more children, diaper covers and the membrane outer part of AIO or pocket diapers are more sensitive and therefore less durable. The polyester laminated with polyurethane (PUL) from which they are made wears out much faster than natural materials.

The lamination, which provides water resistance and breathability at the same time, is very sensitive to washing and drying, storage, but also TIME. In simple words, it ages (and loses its function) faster than other materials - and often regardless the frequency of use or maintenance.

Therefore, we generally recommend keeping the diaper cover and the outer part of the AIO / pocket diapers for the second child only if the maximum storage period of the used washed covers and pockets is 9 months. If they need to be stored for a longer period of time, we recommend selling the PUL pieces off and buying new ones for the next baby.

We also recommend storing new unused PUL items for a maximum of 9 months. During storage, it is necessary to ensure a dry environment without access to sunlight.

You can find more information on how to properly care for PUL diaper covers and pocket diapers in the articles Care & Maintenance of Cloth Diapers or How to Wash Cloth Diapers.
