Earth Day 2023: How Cloth Diapers Save the Environment

Eco-Friendly Reusable Diapers Bamboolik

20,000 tons of non-biodegradable waste that doesn’t exist. 3,300 garbage trucks that weren’t filled. Cloth diapers are truly eco-friendly. How did we come up with these astonishing numbers?

Zero Waste Diapers

Bamboolik has been producing and selling cloth diapers since 2012. To this day, we have sold diapers that would make up for 12,830 Large Diaper Sets - with one of these, you only need to add a few overnight diapers and you’re set from birth to potty. In theory, you don’t have to use a single disposable diaper when you own a Large Diaper Set

12,830 babies that don’t use disposable diapers. That means 56,195,400 disposable diapers that weren’t used. Let’s spell that out:

Fifty-Six Million, One Hundred Ninety-Five Thousand, Four Hundred

How did we arrive at this impressive number? By simple math. On average, a baby needs diapers for 730 days - slightly over the 2 year mark, roughly the onset of potty training. We don’t want to be misleading in the slightest so we ignore the fact that the start of potty training rarely means the end of diapers - it’s usually a more lengthy process.

Most babies need approximately 6 diapers a day, at the very least. Newborns might need more, older toddlers less, but to make things simple, we took 6 as the average number of diapers that are needed every day during the diaper period.

All the disposable diapers that are not needed thanks to our cloth diapers:

Number of babies × number of days × diapers needed for a day

 12 830 × 730 × 6 = 56 195 400

 56 195 400 of disposable diapers that weren’t used

Over 20,000 Tons of Non-Biodegradable Waste

We proceed with our calculations to put things into perspective: We weighed a few used diapers (that stayed on their little users for 2–3 hours — the average diaper changing interval). The average weight of a used disposable diaper was 360 grams.

 56 195 400 × 360 = 20 230 344 000 grams = 20 230 344 kg = 20 230 tons

Let’s imagine: One garbage truck carries 5–7 tons of waste. Disposable diapers that were NOT used thanks to our cloth diapers, would fill 3,371 garbage trucks to the brim.
